ABOUT THE TRAINING

As an arts education consultant with Kentucky schools, Susan offered this training to address needs her clients were facing regarding new state education standards.

This was offered as part of a consortium of teacher trainings in Berea, Kentucky

THE CHALLENGE

Kentucky schools and districts were preparing to implement new state Arts Education standards which required the integration of arts instruction across all grade levels and curriculum areas. Some schools had replaced arts specialists with classroom generalists who would provide all student arts instruction AND train classroom teachers in arts integration. Teachers and administrators across the state traveled to this all-day training seeking guidance in their new role.

THE SOLUTION

Susan was able to deliver a training which took educators from stressed to laughing and from isolated to connecting with others in similar roles. She drew on years of arts education consulting and classroom experience to design and facilitate activities which allowed teachers to share needs and collaborate on solutions. She taught interactive learning structures using applied improvisation. She guided teachers to use these structures to design lessons around their own content. And she facilitated brainstorming of applications to meet new state arts integration standards.

THE RESULTS

Participants shared that the training had given them new energy and ideas to tackle the daunting task before them and they left the workshop laughing.
